The Italian landscape is simply stunning and one of the best ways to really appreciate it is to walk through it. Italy has a wide variety of landscape and terrain. It's ideal for all types of walking, trekking and hiking. Whether you're a beginner or advanced you'll find an activity level to suit your needs. As the country is so mountainous the range of locations is endless.
Some of the best walking locations are: along the Amalfi coast, the Cinque Terre coastline, and of course the Alps and Dolomites.
The Amalfi coast has some spectacular views, with fantastic aquamarine colours. There are also some fairly strenuous walks you can do here, most of which are at high altitudes. You'll find easier walking along the Cinque Terre coastline. It's one of the prettiest coastlines in the country.
In the Alps and Dolomites you'll find hundreds of top quality walking routes along with some amazing scenery and fascinating wildlife. Most of the hiking trails are marked and accommodation is plentiful in the nearby ski resorts. The best times to go walking in these areas are during the summer months.
The Apennines have a wide variety of landscapes and are home to many old Italian towns and small picturesque villages. The mountain range runs for hundreds of miles all along the spine of Italy the spine of Italy.
There is some great walking country within Italy's national parks. One of the more popular parks is the 'Abruzzo'. It's home to bears and wolves! You can stay in a high altitude lodge called a 'Rifugi'. |
