"Ponte Vecchio" literally means Old Bridge. Crossing the Arno River, this is the oldest bridge in Florence and one of the cities most memorable charms. It attracts hundreds of tourists each year. Today the bridge is packed with shops selling all kinds of antique and contemporary jewelry.

Although the bridge itself dates back to Roman times, its present structure is from 1565. This is when they added the Vasari Corridor, which runs around the Manelli tower and all the way to the other side of the Arno River.

From the bridge the views out over the river are superb, especially at sunset. One of the best views of the bridge itself can be seen from a nearby bridge called Ponte Santa Trinita. At sunset, on a clear day the bridge becomes awash with golden, red and yellow muted colours - it's like an idyllic postcard.

In summer, Ponte Vecchio gets very packed; street performers, portrait painters and of course tourists come from all over to make a few euros, hang out and witness the atmosphere and charm of this spectacular old bridge. It's one of the cities greatest landmarks and the chosen meeting place for many young lovers.
